The Governor of the Erongo Region, Honourable Mutjavikua today released a press statement on the outbreak of Hepatitis E.  The Regional leadership under the Chairmanship of Honourable Hafeni Ndemula of the Erongo Regional Council had an information sharing session with key stakeholders.  The Ministry of Health and Social Services gave latest status of affairs. There are 4 cases of Hepatitis E confirmed in Swakopmund, majority of these cases are from the DRC settlement.  Out of 32 cases tested, 4 cases are confirmed as positive, 6 cases negative and 22 cases are pending.    From the suspected cases it takes 2 weeks for the outcome of the result.

We urge the community to adhere to the strict hygiene practices at all times.  The preventative measures are:

•      Wash your hands as frequent as possible, with soap and water, or use hand disinfectant;

•      Wash your fruits and vegetables before consuming;

•      Cook your food properly, avoid half cook food;

•      Boil water before drinking.

The Erongo Regional Council herewith call upon all the residents in the region to stay calm and adhere to basic personal hygiene practices.

We urge the community members to cooperate with the Health Officials that will disseminate information particularly in the Community.
