General Information
The Region is situated at the end of an important road network that interlinks with destinations such as Gauteng Province in South Africa via the Trans-Kalahari Highway. The Trans- Caprivi Highway connects the region to the country's northern business centres and eventually extends further afield to countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
In 2006, a Base Transceiver Station (BTS) as set up at Uis, Okomhahe and Omatjete, making it possible to connect this area with the rest of the world via mobile telecommunication. The Erongo Regional Council is also investigating the potential of a sustained approach to managing the regional road network.
The tollgate system, subject to successful negotiations with stakeholders, may be considered as a way of generating additional resources for the proper maintenance of the road infrastructure, which in turn will have a positive impact on road safety.
The development of the district road network is one of the top priorities in the socioeconomic development of the region. For instance, the Road Board approved a plan to link Erongo with the Kunene Region from its northern border in the Duares constituency via the district road D3712, starting from Okongue.
Once constructed, the road will ease the flow of tourists who currently have to endure this difficult route from Okongue to Khorixas in Kunene. This area, popular for its mopane trees, Ovaherero culture and desert-adapted elephants that roam freely in the Ugab River, is situated some 120 km north west of Omaruru.
