Population Growth, Fertility and Mortality
A total population size of 107 663 people was enumerated during the 2001 National Population and Housing Census (RoN 2003a) in the Erongo Region. Of these, 57 616 (53.5 per cent) were males and 50 040 (46.5 per cent) were females (Table 1). The total number of households is 27 496 with an average household size of 3.8. In 1991 the total population of Erongo Region was 55 470, recording a population growth rate of 94 per cent. Males head 65 per cent of all households in the Erongo Region. The Sex ratio is 115 males for every 100 females. A breakdown of population figures in Erongo per constituency and in line with the 2001 National Population and Housing Census is presented in Table 1.

The average number of children per woman in the Erongo Region declined from 5.1 in 1991 to 3.2 in 2001. Mortality amongst children is expressed in terms of deaths per 1 000 live births. For both sexes mortality amongst children declined from 51 in 1991 to 42 in 2001. Live expectancy at birth for females declined from 66 in 1991 to 59 in 2001 and for males from 63 in 1991 to 54 in 2001. |
